True history

Darlington Raceway is the original superspeedway. When it opened in 1950, it found a home on the schedule for the second season in the history of the Cup series. It was one of just two fully paved tracks on the schedule that year, and the other one, Dayton Speedway in Ohio, was a half-mile short track.

So, the Southern 500 predates the Daytona 500 by nine years.
